Think before you act

  • Avoid using pesticides , (especially slug killer), in your garden

  • Use great care if you must use rat poison, it will kill a hedgehog by causing internal haemorrhage

  • Be careful when using lawn strimmers as these cause many injuries to hedgehogs every year. The noise won't frighten them, they will curl up in a ball and be badly injured by the cutter

  • Check any garden bonfires before lighting to ensure no hedgehogs have taken up residence inside

  • Leave a bowl of water outside, especially during long dry spells


  • Use caution if demolishing a garden shed or clearing away undergrowth as you may disturb a nest beneath
