Do's and don'ts and who to contact.
If you find a hedgehog in distress....
DO....
- Keep it warm - in a suitable high-sided box or container (they are good climbers!), with newspaper and an old towel. A hot water bottle should be placed underneath the box
- Offer mashed up cat food and fresh water
- Check for injuries, fly eggs or maggots
- Seek advice or treatment as soon as possible
- Check for litter mates if it's a small hedgehog
- Remember that hedgehogs are fast becoming an endangered species
DON'T....
- Remove hoglets from a nest unless you are certain that they have been abandoned - wait awhile to see if the mother returns and seek advice
- Give bread or milk - this can be very dangerous
- Assume that the hedgehog will survive without intervention
