Do's and don'ts and who to contact.

If you find a hedgehog in distress....

DO....

  • Keep it warm - in a suitable high-sided box or container (they are good climbers!), with newspaper and an old towel. A hot water bottle should be placed underneath the box
  • Offer mashed up cat food and fresh water
  • Check for injuries, fly eggs or maggots
  • Seek advice or treatment as soon as possible
  • Check for litter mates if it's a small hedgehog
  • Remember that hedgehogs are fast becoming an endangered species

DON'T....

  • Remove hoglets from a nest unless you are certain that they have been abandoned - wait awhile to see if the mother returns and seek advice
  • Give bread or milk - this can be very dangerous
  • Assume that the hedgehog will survive without intervention
